On March 27, we will set a Polish Record inspired by the art of origami
During the 4th edition of the National Materials Engineering Day (ODIM 2026), participants across Poland will attempt to set a new Polish Record in the category „The largest number of origami rockets folded within four hours”.
The challenge is inspired by an educational origami rocket model developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as part of the MIT Better World initiative.
While origami may seem like a simple artistic activity, its principles are increasingly used in advanced engineering. Origami-inspired structures are applied in fields such as aerospace engineering, where large elements must be compact during launch and then deployed in space. Similar design concepts are used in satellite antennas, solar panels, and future space habitats.
During ODIM 2026, students, teachers, researchers and science enthusiasts from institutions across Poland will simultaneously build paper rockets, demonstrating how simple geometric folding principles relate to real engineering challenges.
By combining education, collaboration and creativity, the event highlights how curiosity-driven learning can inspire the engineers and scientists of the future.
The activity also reflects the spirit of the #MITBetterWorld initiative – showing how science and engineering education can help build a better future.
