Types of studies
Since 2001, the Faculty of Production Engineering studies are carried out in a three step system, modeled on the solutions used in leading academic centers in Europe and the United States. The characteristics of the three step system of studies are their division into the following types:
- I degree: studies in engineering,
- II degree: Master's degree,
- III degree: PhD.
The uniqueness of this system is:
- The division of studies into: engineering studies (7 semesters), MSc (4 semesters), PhD (8 semesters).
- After completing the next steps you can take up a job or continue one’s studies in the previous or related field of studies, or at the other Faculty.
- The student's program of study may be outlined by opting elective subjects, specializations, diploma profiles and the subject - matter of the interim and diploma projects.
- Matching the pace of one’s studies program to individual abilities; the nominal period of study to obtain the title of Eng. is 3.5 years long, it is possible to complete both in shorter and longer period of time (not more than 5 years long)
- Specific subjects have assigned so – called credits related to their labor - consumption, the total number of points is 30 in each semester, with an average of 25 hours of classes per week.
- While the Faculty change occurs, the transfer of credits ensues regardless of differences in the program content.
- Registration for next semester is based on the cumulative number of the obtained credit points.
During the first six semesters of the first degree studies students are given basic knowledge relevant to the technical studies and the area of study one has chosen. At the VII semester students of all fields of study write an engineering diploma thesis.
The transition to studies of a higher degree (eg MSc) is based on rules adopted for the whole institution on the basis of parametric study , i.e., assessment of one’s studies (for students pursuing the first degree while being at the second degree of their studies) or on the basis of qualification exam (for those changing the field of study).
In case of candidates of the II degree studies, those who finished their studies at other Universities or study fields other than one wishes to study, the Faculty Admissions Committee determines additional, supplementary activities, or additional examinations of the subjects corresponding to these classes.
Enrollment for each of the stages is carried out independently, which means that candidates for the second and the third degree will be recruited at the Warsaw University of Technology, as well as other universities both public and private. Bachelor's degree gives students a basic knowledge of general and technical support. Graduates of Automation and Robotics (AIR) are prepared to design automation systems for machining operations, programming and operation of automated manufacturing systems and manage the basic organizational units of industrial plants equipped with automated machining systems. Graduates of the second degree and in the field of Mechanical Engineering (MiBM) are prepared to solve the basic tasks that occur at work i.e. design technologist typical processes of individual treatments, complex processes of manufacturing of machines and technological equipment and the management of basic organizational units in the plant engineering industry. Graduates of Paper and Printing (PIP) field are prepared to professional work in the printing industry and related industries, operation of machines and technological processes in industrial plants and business ownership. Graduates of the Management and Production Engineering (ZiIP) field are engineers having education within the fields of organization and management as well as in the field of technical sciences, economics, legal and social issues. The first degree of studies in Automation and Robotics has no division of specialties. The Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, Papermaking and Printing field of study and ZiIP let the student himself choose one’s own specialization.
The second degree of studies is carried out in the fields of Automatic Control and Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, The Paper-making and the Printing, Management and Production Engineering. Graduates studying at the second degree of their studies are provided with an advanced knowledge of general and technical subjects and preparation for analysis, synthesis and design of complex technical issues and organizational – economic aspect of their studies. Graduates are also prepared for the use of the modern computer tools and expertise in economic analysis, implementation and production. Second-degree specialties are in all fields of studies. The division into specialties happens during the first or second semester. The number of specialties at the Faculty is not limited. In case of appearing of the new opportunities for education, labor market needs and interests of students the new specialty can be appointed. Further diversification of study programs can be achieved by individual selection of the elective profiles of the diploma subjects, languages and humanities. In 2009, the English second degree studies majoring in Management and Production Engineering were launched for the specialty of the Global Production Engineering Management. Classes are conducted largely by lecturers from abroad, and at least one semester of study must be carried out at a foreign university (now the Polytechnic of Milan). Completing the next steps of one’s studies it is possible to take up a job and update one’s knowledge in postgraduate studies. There is also an option to continue one’s studies after graduation at doctoral studies of the third degreeto be awarded of PhD.
